Smart BIS 1st Research Seminar 21-22

The Smart Business Information Systems & Digital Transformation (Smart BIS)'s team organises the first research seminar of this academic year.

Developing Theory With Literature Reviews: Theoretical Concept Synthesis (Okoli, C.)

Monday 13th September 2021 from 8:45am to 9:45am (Paris time),

Prof. Okoli from Skema Business School (Paris) presents his recent research -in-progress entitled "Developing Theory With Literature Reviews: Theoretical Concept Synthesis".

His past works, in particular, on systematic literature review has had a huge impact on IS research.

Abstract:
Developing Theory With Literature Reviews: Theoretical Concept Synthesis

It is well understood that one of the most valuable contributions that a literature review can offer in the information systems discipline is to develop theory. However, it is not clear what exactly it means for a literature review to contribute to theory. I provide evidence that the specific technique of theoretical concept synthesis (TCS) is the approach that is generally most effective in contributing to theory, as shown by a citation analysis of literature reviews in the information systems discipline. I then outline some helpful principles of using TCS to further increasing theoretical contribution by developing novel insights from the literature. While these principles mainly refer to standalone literature reviews and thesis literature reviews, they also apply to the brief literature review section of any scholarly article that aims to make a theoretical contribution.
