Abstract:

The field of business ethics is in rapid evolution, in part due to the increasing diversity and internationalization of the field, in part due to the multiple and complex challenges facing business and society. These challenges demand reflection across the social sciences and management disciplines more generally; however, because of the unique place of business ethics in examining the normative role for organizations in society, this discipline must be at the forefront of such reflections. In this seminar, I will draw upon my experience at Journal of Business Ethics to reflect broadly on the current state of the field, suggesting emerging themes for exploration and some of the important challenges in constructing a business ethics discipline that is socially relevant, thematically coherent, and theoretically rigorous.

Gazi Islam is Professor of People, Organizations and Society at Grenoble Ecole de Management, and member of the research laboratory IREGE (Research Institute for Management and Economics) at the University of Savoie Mont-Blanc. He is co-Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Business Ethics. His research interests revolve around business ethics and the contemporary meanings of work, including the relations between identity, power and the production of group and organizational cultures.
