Leader: Pr Müge Özman (IMT-BS)

Past work

In the field of innovation, we have explored sectoral dynamics, particularly in the digital (including AI) and health sectors: knowledge management (intellectual property, open innovation, etc.), innovative organisations (networks, business ecosystems, associations, or startups), new business models and societal issues in the health and digital sectors (technostress, platformisation, role of cooperatives, privacy, etc.). A growing number of studies focuses on financial markets and their financing instruments (venture capital, private equity, real options, or crowdfunding), as well as on organisations (entrepreneurship, public-private partnerships, or human resources).

Current and future work

While research is continuing in the same vein as previous work, a growing body of research focuses on the societal challenges of technologies and organisations: gender equality, privacy protection, responsible innovation, contribution to sustainable development goals, ecological and social transitions. Several idea labs have been launched to explore these emerging topics. For example, an ongoing project (led by Pr Jean-Luc Moriceau) analyses the dynamics of startups incubated by Genopole, with which a seminar on responsible research and innovation was organised in 2018 (link).

Expertise, tools, networks

Methods used are both qualitative and quantitative (patent analyses, network analyses, case studies, online questionnaires, interviews, econometrics, web scraping, systematic literature reviews, etc.). Examples of databases include Patstat (patents) in innovation studies, or are constructed and managed in-house. Research networks include for example in the field of innovation UNU MERIT, SPRU (U. of Sussex), ICRIOS (U. Bocconi), Ingenio (U. P. Valencia), SOAS(U. of London).
